LEGO® Jurassic World Review

LEGO® Jurassic World Review

The LEGO® game franchise from Traveller’s Tales scores again with LEGO® Jurassic World. Want to hunt dinosaurs, or maybe jump into a pile of dino dung to find something important? How about playing as a velociraptor or a triceratops to charge and destroy everything in your way? If your answer is yes, then this game may be for you.

As with the other titles this game remains true to the movie franchise while managing to become humorous and fun even for younger players. One nice caveat that stands out is the dinosaur facts provided by Mr. DNA that appear during loading segments.

The title does a good job of utilizing the first three movies and bringing you back in time to relive those “holy cow” moments from the older movies while incorporating the new movie into the game. Something that is noticeable and much appreciated is you don’t have to play the movies in sequence. You can take advantage of a monorail to hop between the prior movie plots and playing the new Jurassic World inspired content. Playing out the game in a order you choose is a break from previous LEGO® titles and helps those who want to play along with the movie they just saw.

Players will still spend most of their time destroying the scenery to get blocks to build other needed items. This kind of repetition is prevalent in all of the LEGO® titles and was expected. However, a noticeable difference in this game is the reduction of the never ending mindless combat. True this can also become repetitive and maybe even boring for some players, younger children who just want to “play” enjoy this aspect of the game. That being said, this change will most likely be welcomed by older players.

The graphics of this game are perhaps the best of any of the LEGO® titles. Cut scenes are done particularly well and animation is superior. Controls are still a little quirky, as with other LEGO® games. Camera angles are sometimes detrimental to making a precise jump and offer some frustration throughout the game. Minor bugs regarding your companions are also a small annoyance requiring you to sometimes log out and back in again. Although it should be said these were rare and should not dissuade one from playing this “bigger than life” title.

LEGO® Jurassic World is a bit more linear than other LEGO® games. It has less of an open world and more directed missions. This results in shorter missions and less travelling fro point A to point B. Less exploration is not missed as this game provides a faster pace.

Co-op play is always a blast for ego titles and this game is the same. It is a great game for a parent and child to achieve some bonding time while having fun and achieving some genuine laughs at time from the Lego style of humor that exists in all of their games. Come on, who really is not going to chuckle at a smiley face made out of steam left by a terrifying velociraptor after breathing on the window?

Overall, this is a good title and enjoyable. If you are a fan of the movies, you will want to pick this game up.

We rank LEGO® Jurassic World a 7 out of 10.
